Prime sheep Although the varding of 2083 prime sheep was' 859 more than the previous week, old ewes and hoggets were in keen demand. The quality of the old ewes was described as very good and values increased bv $2 to $3 compared with last week. Heavily woolled old ewes regularly reached $l9 and the top price was $23.60. Hoggets firmed in price by about $1.50. The over-afl quality of hoggets was described as good, although several pens of light hoggets were offered. Values were:— Best hoggets, to $30.60. . Medium hoggets, $23 to $27. Light hoggets, $l6 to $22. • Best old ewes, to $20.80, with odd sales to. $23.60. . Medium bld ewes, $l3 to $l7. Light old ewes, $9 to $l2. Sales included:— Hoggets: D. A. Prime cattle The prime cattle market held up well considering the yarding of 534 head was more than double last week’s total of 251. Light steers and heifers were slightly harder to sell than the previous week, but heavy stock maintained their value. A feature of the market was a Simmental cross steer sold on behalf of C. J. Patterson (Lakeside) for $BO4. Simmental and Simmental cross cattle also topped the heifer and cow sections: a Simmental cross cow from W. R. Hudson (Styx) made $448. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold for between 144 c and 150 c a kilogram, between 220 kg and 270 kg. from 148 c to 154 c, and over 270 kg, to 156 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $5BB, with odd sales to $BO4. Prime medium steers, $3BO to $450. Prime light steers, $250 to $370. Dairy cows A feature of the dairy section was the sale of 22 in-calf Friesian heifers on behalf of C. E. and I. E. Jenkins (Port Levy). Fifteen rising 3-year-old heifers sold between $255 and $435 (at an average of $358) and seven rising 2-year-olds made from $205 to $305 (an average of $243). Other in-calf Friesians sold from $220 to $3lO and Friesian heifers with calves made $315 to $3BO. A total of 29 dairy cows were yarded, compared with 13 last week.
Vealers A total of 91 vealers was yarded, compared with 41 last week. Good stock had a ready sale, but some pens of light stock were held over for the store cattle sale. A dairy-bred steer calf, in top condition, made $252 and the bulk of the 18-month heifers sold from $lBO to $2lO. Fat pigs Fat pigs were again short although quality was generally better than at recent sales. The market remained strong with light pigs making to $9O and heavy pigs to $l5O. A 'small yarding of choppers met a good’demand and values were $lO to $l5 ahead of last week's. Values were:— ■ Light pork. $BO to $95. Medium to heavy pork, $lOO to $ll4. Light to medium bacon, $llB to $l3O. Heavy bacon. $135 to $l5O. Heavy choppers. $l5O to $175. Light’ choppers, $lOO to $l3O. Store pigs Large store pigs dominated a big yarding of store pigs. Although the market eased late in the sale, values remained sound. Good quality large stores sold to $BO. and medium stores regularly made $65. Weaners and slips showed little change from last week’s sale. ■ ■ Values were:— Small weaners. $37 to $42. Good weaners, $44 to $5O. Slips and small stores. $52 to $6O. Large stores. $62 to $66.
