Logo to be redrawn

The designer of a Waimairi district logo will be asked by the Waimairi District Council to redraw the bottom half of it. This is in spite of a plea by Cr H. M. Tait that the design be discussed further. Cr Tait told the council's monthly meeting that she was concerned that the designer was being asked to redesign part of the logo without having had further direction from the council. She wanted the matter to return to the information sub-committee. Cr P. M. Carter said that the matter had already been to the sub-committee twice. He strongly opposed the suggestion. The council agreed that the cost of redesigning the logo should not exceed $2OO. Art exhibition The choice of Realist paintings for an art exhibition, partly finance by the council, was opposed by Cr I. G. Clark.

Cr Clark sought a definition of Realist, which was found by the Deputy County Clerk, Mr P. W. Chapple. (Realist art attempts to show familiar or typical subjects from real life).

Cr Clark said after hearing the definition that he was utterly opposed to such a display. The council should not support “chocolate-box pictures,” he said. The acting chairman, Cr I. Calvert, said that it was a developing art form. -If Cr Clark had misgivings, the council could obtain samples of Realist art, he said. Church building Any appeal by Mr P. Lord against a council decision opposing the use of his Heathglen Avenue house for church activities would have to be to the Planning Tribunal, said Cr Calvert. Mr Lord wrote to the council opposing the decision. Cr W.. T. Rice said that Mr Lord’s mistake had been to -erect a notice about the-

church's activities. Several such church groups existed in metropolitan Christchurch without giving . offence to people, and had no official permission, he said. Flooding The council was paying for. and installing, an open drain at the rear of properties near the Upper Riccarton Domain, to stop flooding from the domain, councillors were told. . • This would allow the quick discharge of stormwater. The work was being done on a trial basis after a meeting with residents.
