Buyers were hesitant to bid for large or expensive items of farm equipment at the annual machinery sale organised by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd, near Ashburton last week. Mr Russell Smith, head auctioneer for Pynes at Ashburton, is pictured offering for sale a Massey Ferguson 35 tractor which was passed in at $llOO. Small sundry items sold well, but headers and tractors often failed to reach the reserve price.' Auctioneers said that selling was more difficult this year because of the drought and consequent financial position of many farmers. However, negotiations for the private sale of many items continued after the sale and the auctioneers reported a good clearance of stock. Two teams of auctioneers were kept busy for most of the day selling the 980 lots which was about 100 fewer than last year. Buyers from many parts of the. South Island including Invercargill and Marlborough attended.
