Beware of robots!
The fictional concept of robots as mechanical monsters is becoming so close to reality that guidelines are being developed for the control of factory robots. In a Japanese car factory, a robot went beserk recently and killed a man. the London "Daily Telegraph” reported. Now, the London-based Machine Tool Trades Association and the Health and Safety Executive has drawn up a guide to keep robots subservient. The newspaper reported the association as saying: “Industrial robots are rapidly being recognised as an integral part of the manufacturing scene.
“But their introduction to engineering workshops can pose particular problems from a safety point of view. "Unlike other automated machinery, robots tend to move faster and in unpredictable patterns. "In a modern car factory they look like dangerous birds with welding probes as beaks, spitting sparks and making darting stabbing actions. "Humans who get in the way can be badly burned or killed by the welding arm.” The association plans to make the guide available to industry at $l6 a copy.— N.Z.P.A., London
