Detectives sift information in hunt for killer

Detectives were yesterday sifting through information from about 50 people who have come forward to try to help in the hunt for the killer of Mr Alfred Anderson. Among the informants was a girl who said she had seen two males in the area of Mr Anderson's flat, at the corner of Waltham Road and Hastings Street, at 12.45 a.m. last Saturday, the night Mr Anderson was killed. One was a Maori man who walked east past a telephone box in Hastings Street near the corner. The other was a European who walked east along Brougham Street, crossed Waltham Road as far as the median strip, then turned and retraced his steps. Both men were thought to be aged in their 20s. Detectives would like to hear from the men. "not because we think they are the offenders, but because they could have valuable information." said the officer in charge of the case. Detec-

five Inspector R. G. McMeeking. He said that the girl's sighting was a good example of the information the police had received since they appealed for help from the public. It is now six days since Mr Anderson, aged 62. was found dead in the lounge of his flat with throat and head wounds. Detectives are following several lines of inquiry, but were still appealing for help from the public, said Mr McMeeking. .The Wellington police now’ believe that some of the attacks on the murdered Raumati South pensioner. Mr Billy Venn, could have taken place outside. Mr Venn was found lying in a pool of blood in a sun porch at the rear of his Leinster Avenue home on Monday. The police have not identified a murder weapon, but have found several likely implements, including garden tools from a garage, which will be given forensic examination.
