Minister upset at F.O.L. decision
PA Wellington The Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Templeton) expressed disappointment yesterday that the Federation of Labour was not prepared to support closer economic relations with Australia at this stage. Mr Templeton said he hoped that when the F.O.L. had more time to study the C.E.R. draft proposals released last week "it would come to appreciate the opportunities C.E.R. offers." The F.O.L. said it did not consider C.E.R. represented any solution to New Zealand's economic problems. It will, however, encourage its affiliates to participate in discussions that will continue on the draft until July 30. At a C.E.R. forum organised by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr Templeton said that here had been "magnificent" public support for the C.E.R. objectives. He said that he was confident that fears would be' switched to positive enterprise as C.E.R. seminars proceed. “Of equal importance. I expect the seminars to help stimulate many business people who have not seriously considered marketing in Australia." he said. The Government is spon- ' soring about 16 seminar ses-. sions in centres from Whangarei to Invercargill, and the Manufacturers' Federation is arranging about four additional seminars in the main centres. The Government seminars ' will begin in Nelson on June 14 and extend through until early July. Mr Templeton said that New Zealand's success with C.E.R. “would hinge in part on more competitive attitudes." “In spite of setbacks. New Zealand attitudes generally are sharpening and are more competitive," said Mr Templeton. He said that the “totality of C.E.R.'s effects must be considered ahead of effects taken in isolation."
