M.P. seeks TV inquiry

PA Wellington A Labour member of Parliament wants the Government to set up an inquiry into how new technology can be applied to telecommunications, particularly television. Mr J. J. Terris (Western Hutt) said that concepts such as satellite and cable television, and Viewdata, should be a matter of "urgent public debate" to avoid confusion in the market if they were introduced on a special basis. He said that.if the Government was unwilling to set up an inquiry, he would suggest such a body be set up by the Labour Party caucus. There is already a Communications Advisory Committee. but said Mr Terris, the inquiry should be fully open to the public, and the existing committee had not held a public hearing in its five-year existence. A spokesman for the Minister of Science, Technology, and Broadcasting (Dr Shearer) said the issues Mr Terris raised were already under consideration by the Post Office, Broadcasting, and private interests.
