Paparua county rate rise
Rate increases of a little under 15 per cent for urban areas, and just over 12 per cent for rural areas, were set by the Paparua County Council last evening.
A general rate increase of 12 5 per cent was struck for the Sockburn. Hornby, and Halswell district community councils and the Rural District Council. This figure rose in urban and rural areas when special bodies rates and service charges were taken into account. The council’s estimated county rate levy is $5,748,982. $2,254,392 of this amount being collected on behalf of ad hoc bodies. The high-pressure watersupply charge for Paparua. Halswell and Tai Tapu will increase by 15 per cent -or $46 for each connected dwelling. Sanitation collection will increase to $145 a household.
and the Templeton sewerage rate will rise to $74.80 a household. The council's stock watersupply. which is calculated on area plus irrigation charges as scaled, will increase to 12.5 per cent. The council’s proposed turnover for this year is $9,336,668 compared with $8,336,140 last financial year. In addition to the normal works programme of the council's, four administrative districts, the estimates provide for the completion of a $4 million high-pressure water-supply improvement scheme for the PaparuaHalswell supply system. Provision for $337,000 has been made for maintenance and development of the council's reserves. An increase of $30,000 in the levy for capital works and running of the Christchurch Metropolian Refuse
Disposal Scheme, and provision of $31,000 for community reserves is estimated. The council has also allowed $182,500 mainly for the maintenance of services at the council’s library and cultural centre, and at the Halswell and Hei Hei libraries. The County Chairman, Mr J. Y. Pethig, told the meeting that the council’s over-all financial position was “very sound." "Main items which have a large bearing on the level of rating include wages and salaries, plant-hire.rates. and the cost of materials necessary for the day-to-day running of the council." Mr Pethig said. He said that the council continued to meet its fair share of costs of main metropolitan and regional areas, as well as the metropolitan refuse disposal scheme and the Canterbury United Council.
