Poll on L.P.G. plans
Lyttelton residents are being asked whether they think liquefied petroleum gas should be unloaded at the port's oil wharf. The Lyttelton Borough Council is running a poll to gauge residents’ feelings on the controversial plan & unload L.P.G. at the wharf. Every Lyttelton. Cass Bay, and Corsair Bay household has been sent a questionnaire. which asks residents whether they support the unloading of L.P.G. at the wharf, and whether they would like to comment oh the proposal. Ballot boxes, have been
placed about Lyttelton for residents to return the questionnaire, which the council wants returned by June 15. Backgrounding the L.P.G. proposal, the questionnaire says that a Commission of Inquiry into the proposed L.P.G.’ pumping station and pipeline will sit from June 28. According to the council, the Liquigas Consortium plans to berth 1000-tonne L.P.G. tankers at the wharf up to 30 times a year. After unloading the L.P.G. will be pumped from a station near the council's recreation ground, along a
submarine pipeline across Corsair Bay and Cass Bay, and over the Rapaki ridge to a bulk storage depot in Woojston. The council said that to have L.P.G. tankers berthing at the oil wharf would “create unacceptable risks : for the community." The council also believes no thorough investigation has been made of alternative berthage sites outside the inner iiarbour. Councillors have decided to test resident's views by having a poll, the results of which will be presented to the commission.
