PA New Plymouth The establishment of casinos, the introduction of poker machines at international airports, and the introduction of lotto were the subject of remits carried at the Dominion conference of the Young Nationals, at the Chateau Tongariro during the week-end. The lotto remit was passed in a close vote. 39 to 36. Other successful remits
gave support to the introduction of random breath testing; the appointment of a police ombudsman to review complaints; the elimination of lead from petrol and synthetic petrol; support for the A.N.Z.U.S. Treaty- and for visits to New Zealand by United States naval ships; and opposition to compulsory military service when there is no direct threat to NewZealand.
On the second day of the conference the only successful remit called for a referendum at the next General Election on whether the Parliamentary term should be extended to four years. The conference w'as addressed by the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Templeton), the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). and the Minister of Transport (Mr Gain), among other speakers.
