Apointee a chess expert
An internationally renowned computer chess expert, Dr T. A. Marsland, has been appointed as the director of the University of Canterbury computer centre. Dr Marsla'nd, a professor of computer science at the University of Alberta, Canada, has written widely about computer chess, and has competed in several world championships. Dr Marsland, who is 44, received his first degree at the University of Nottingham in 1958. Since then he has gained a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in computer science at Washington University. He joined the computer science department of the University of Alberta in 1970. Since then he has published many computer papers and technical reports. His reported interests include the social implications of computing, computer fraud, and data base security.
He has organised computer chess workshops in Canada, and is a member of the liaison commr.tee of the International Computer Chess Association. Dr Marsland is married, with three children. He will take up his appointment later this year.
