Wage-price freeze?
PA Wellington The Labour Party yesterday predicted that wage and price freezes were close. The Opposition spokesman on consumer affairs, Mrs Ann Hercus, said there was rampant speculation that the Government was planning a tough wage freeze, and would ally it with a weaker price freeze. Asked on Monday about the possibility of freezes, the Prime Minister (Mr Mul-
doon) did not confirm or deny the rumours. He told journalists there were “all kinds of angles” and that the rumours could have started because it was well known that the Government had told farmer representatives there would be no increase in supplementary minimum prices. Mrs Hercus said yesterday that big commercial interests “have clearly been tipped to get in quickly be-
fore the -regulations come through.” She said there was a deluge of price increases now coming through, “largely because of widespread’ expectations that a price freeze would be im- . posed before the Budget.” The Labour Party called on the Government to act immediately to impose a tough price freeze to counter the increases.
