Maurice Burrowes wins table tennis

The top-ranked Canterbury men's table tennis player, Maurice Burrowes, won the MidCanterbury Open championship when he beat the provincial No. 3, Michael Hamel, in an absorbing five-set final in Ashburton at the week-end. Burrowes. aged 26. beat Hamel. 26-24, 22-20, 20-22, 17-21, 21-14. in a match which produced some spectacular rallies. Burrowes opened up a solid lead in the first set after showing a little more control of the counter-hitting exchanges, but Hamel fought back to 20-20 and over the next three games tne pair traded point' for point. Burrowes' consistency gave him the edge in the deci’ding set despite the occasional nice touch from his opponent. In the semi-finals, Hamel beat the defending champion, Simeon Cairns, in straight sets. Cairns, now living in Dunedin, was ranked one place ahead of Hamel in Canterbury last year, but the Otago player had no answer for Hamel’s fast serve-hit combinations this time. In the other semi-final. Burrowes beat Michael Prisk, the

current Canterbury champion, without dropping a set. The New Zealand champion. Jan Morris, beat the Canterbury No. 2, Pam Shadbolt, in the final of the women s .event.
