Improvement in service
Not only is the Railways Corporation showing improved results on the ChristchurchPicton line, but the regularity of service of the Wellington-Picton ferries has also increased.
Figures released for the year ending March 31, 1982, show that only 20 return sailings were cancelled because of industrial relations and 16 of these were because of the Springbok tour. The other four were all one-off situations. The massive number of stoppages in the 1979-80 year was not caused by the Railways unions, but by industrial action by the Picton Harbour Board. The nuclear-powered vessel, Truxtun, also visited Wellington that year. In 1979, Railways introduced a policy of cancelling the 4 p.m. sailing if there was insufficient freight and passengers. The next sailing was only two hours away. Nearly 5000 litres of oil are saved during each cancellation.
