Antarctic research

Sir, — For years our scientists have condemned the Government for its lack of interest . and support in Antarctic .. research. Now' the outgoing , president of S.C.A.R. (Professor ■’! G. A. Knox) adds the weight oF< his voice publicly (“Tjie Press,” .. May 28). Attitudes are changing but -it is the Minister of T Energy and National Development, not the Minister for Science and the Environment, who is spearheading the new ? concern. Mr Birch sees New Zealand “on the verge of era in Antarctic affairs, one that reflects the economic realities of sovereignty.” Under , such pressures, our research will be moved away from the basic sciences. Yet if Antafc* tica is to remain the unique laboratory which enables us to ‘ increase our understanding of complex global forces and to monitor changes triggered off by our technological society, then it must itself remain ,■ unexploited. Antarctica belongs to the world and not to the handful of nations meeting in Wellington to agree on a cosy exploitation within the “club.” — Yours, etc., ; ERIC BENNETT. May 30, 1982. <
