More than skin deep
avwwiwss l !
Many women suffering from acne and pimples fondly believe that the irritation is only cosmetic. That the problem can often go more than skin deep, however, and be the warning signal for more serious hormonal disorders is the belief of an expert on reproductive medicine and biology at the University of Houston Medical School. On “8.8. C. Science Magazine" (Concert programme, 7.30 tonight) he talks: about the elevated' male hormone levels found in the blood of a proportion of women suffering from acne. Others had serious dys-
function as women to the degree that they did not menstruate or ovulate. His conclusion is that the majority of acne-in women is due to hyperandrogenism. or an excess of male hormones, and treatments recommended are by hormonal means. Other topics in this week’s programme concern a ship that was dug up from alongside the Egyptian pyramid of King Cheops, the 1970 “geomagnetic jerk" and theories about' its origins deep in the earth, and finally, possible treatments for the blinding
eye disorder, Retinitis Pigmentosa. Country music Jim Healey will return with his country music programme today (National programme, .8 p.m.) and he will include top-line artists from way back up to the present day. Listeners are being invited to send in their lists of country and western artists they would like to hear.
