New bulky wool knitting machine

Bulky knitting wools, from double knit up to homespun wool, can be used successfully on the latest Brother KH-230 knitting machine. . This machine, which costs

$289, has been specifically designed to handle all the heavier yarns. Simpson’s Sewing Centre at 624 Colombo Street now has these new .machines available and qualified staff to demonstrate the types of wool which can be used. This is. not the first machine which will take bulky wool but it is the first that can knit such a wide range of the heavier yarns. Mohair, triple, knit, fourply brushed wool, chenille, six-ply and double knit are all suitable. As well the machine has facilities for plating. The term plating means, that two yarns are knitted on top of one another. This allows fine yarns, such as the fancy glitter, to be used in conjunction with a bulky wool.

The machine does not have ribbing facilities but ribbing can be achieved by dropping every second stitch on stocking stitch. The dropped stitch is then picked up on a crochet needle and crocheted back through to the knitting needle. There are three operating settings'— plain, for stocking stitch; part, for skip stitch and intarsia for picture knitting. It also has 110 needles which makes it ideal for sideways knitted sweaters and for larger sizes. Correct tension is essential for any knitting and it is best to knit a sample first to test the tension. A, complete set of stitch scales is included with the machine. These scales are also used with the Knitleader attachment which is bought separately. The Knitleader ■ allows patterns to be graphed on to a chart and makes it extremely straightforward to knit fairisle or picture patterns. . .... •
