Prices for cattle in good condition continue rise

Addington market

Prices for prime cattle continued to rise at the Addington clock market yesterday. Cattle in good condition have ' improved in price in recent weeks because of the shortage of feed. With little feed growth during, the winter, prices for prime cattle and sheep are expected to continue to firm during the next few weeks. Top hoggets and prime lambs vesterdav exceeded $3O and fat pigs had a strong sale. Calves and adult store cattle were in keen demand. Prime Lambs Prime lambs had another good sale with prices similar to last weeks. .Heavy lambs were in demand with the best exceeding $3l. The yarding of 885 included several "light lambs. Last week a total of 766 lambs were yarded. Several pens of woolly lambs in very good order, which arrived late at the sale, were'sold at the end of the day. These lambs made the top price of $31.60. Allthough the yardingg of 308 was 59 more than the previous week, good quality butcher’s-type cattle were scarce. Top steers were in strong demand and several sold for more than $5OO. A large yarding of cows had a good sale with buyers from the freezing works bidding more freely than in recent weeks. A friesian steer from the Takamatua Farming company (Takamauta) sold for $640 and Hereford steers from the Estate of M. Bethell (Culverden) made to $542. In the heifer section, a Limousin from Benmore Graziers (Springston) sold for $512 and two Hereford cows from Ben Ohau station (Lake Ohau) made $370. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold for between 138 c and 144 c a kilogram, between 220 kg and 270 kg. from 143 c to 148 c, and over 270 kg. to 154 c. The over-all quality of the yarding was better than last week, although numbers were down. Quality was generally good and only very, small weaners sold for less than $4O. Breeding stock also sold well with' young sows making to $345 and older sows to $320. Values were: Small weaners. $32-to $40..

Good weaners. $42 to $5O. Slips and small stores, $5O to $6O. Large stores, $62 to $6B. Store Cattle The store cattle section attracted more interest from buyers than it has in several weeks. Calves had a strong sale, increasing in price by about $l5 compared with last week's market. Angus steer calves sold to $144 and Herefords to $124. Buyers from Southland provided strong buying power in the adult section. Eighteen-month steers sold mainly between $l6O and $220 and heifers made from $l4O to $lB5.
