Ice-cream workers

PA Wellington Coverage of ice-cream manufacturing freezer hands by the Food Processors’ Award has been confirmed by Chief Judge J; R. P. Horn, in an Arbitration Court decision. The coverage was challenged by the Northern Storemen and Packers’ Union, in a demarcation dispute heard by the Court in April. The case related to workers employed by Gen-

eral Foods Corporation. Ltd. Chief Judge Horn said that freezing was substantially a part of the. manufacturing process of ice-cream. The rules of the Food Processing and Chemical Workers’ Union were wide enough to cover freezer hands, and that union had existing practice in its favour, he said. Mr Rob Campbell was the advocate for the Storemen and Packers’ Union, and Mr Garth Fraser for the processing union at the hearings.
