Compensation for girl after caning
NZPA London British teachers yesterday attacked a decision to give 5NZ55.00 compensation to a girl who was caned at school. A spokesman for the National Association of Head Teachers said the award “puts us in an intolerable position.” Some teachers believe the case will spell the end of. corporal punishment in schools. lieved io be the first time a pay-out has been made for corporal punishment. A further six cases are before the European Court, which ruled this year that caning should be outlawed in Britain’s 35,000 State schools. The girl was given three strokes of the cane at Northwich Girls' Grammar School, Cheshire, for eating crisps in a maths lesson. ; .Miss Simmons’s parents brought a private summons for assault.' This case was dismissed after it emerged that Miss Simmons had; a history of. disruptive behaviour, the "Daily Express” reported yesterday.
