League player dies
PA Auckland A Ponsonby Maritime under-21 rugby league player died within hours of being taken out of a game feeling groggy on Saturday. He was John ’Talamaivao. aged 19. unemployed, of Grey Lynn. Police said he had made several hard tackles in the match against Otahuhu under-21s at Grey Lynn Park and was seen to stagger on
the field. He had become confused and was taken off the field, unable to remember the score or the name of the team he was playing. Talamaivao was taken to a friend’s house where he asked to lie down. When his condition became worse an ambulance was called but ambulancemen were unable to revive, him and he died about 7.20 p.m.
