Dr Shearer to see Japanese technology

NZPA staff correspondent

Hong Kong The Minister of Science and Technology (Dr Shearer) will inspect some of the latest Japanese achievements. in electronics and agricultural and food research during a four-day visit to Japan that begins today.

Also, as Minister of Broadcasting, he will see some of the latest developments in communications, including fibre optic and laser techniques. Dr Shearer will be accompanied by senior officials of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the president of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr E. G. Bollard.

The officials and Dr Bollard are expected to remain

in Japan for further discussions after Dr Shearer leaves for Singapore on Friday.

It will be the first visit to Japan by a New Zealand Minister ’ of Science and Technology. According to a New Zealand Embassy spokesman in Tokyo, Dr Shearer is expected to take particular interest in the Japanese Government's policy toward technological development and also explore the prospects for scientific exchange, mainly in the horticultural field.

His very full formal programme will start tomorrow, when he is due to meet the director-general of the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, Mr Ichiro Nakagawa. On Wednesday, Dr Shearer and his party will visit Tsukuba, a city of scientific

research establishments north of Tokyo which greatly impressed the French president, Mr Francois Mitterrand, during a recent visit.

Research stations that the New Zealand group will tour are concerned with electronics, fruit trees, plant viruses, and food.

Thursday’s programme will involve a tour of the Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, and visits to a vineyard, an orchard, a horticultural testing station, and a factory producing industrial robots.

Before leaving on Friday evening, Dr Shearer will visit the giant Nippon Electric Corporation headquarters to look into recent developments in communications.

These will include fibre optics, laser beams, and microwaves.
