Cassidy’s century
PA Wellington Jim Cassidy rode three winners at Masterton on Saturday to join a select band who have won 100 races in a season. Cassidy, aged 20, who had ridden 99 winners after the Thames meeting last Tuesday, came up with his century when he rode the favourite Gleneen, to victory in the second race at Masterton.
Later in the day Cassidy took his tally for the season to 102 when he scored on Tallboy in the third event and Royal Ambush in the last.
Cassidy, who was the leading apprentice for two years until he came out of his time in January, is the eighth jockey in New Zealand to ride 100 winners in a season.
The other seven were Bill Skelton, Bruce Compton, David Peake, Bob Vance, Brian Andrews, Keith Voitre and Hector Gray. Skelton and Compton jointly hold the New Zealand record of 124 victories in a season.
