Twilight Mist close to top pacing company

B 5

G. K. YULE

Twilight Mist finished her four-year-old racing in style by winning the Canterbury Park Winter Cup at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway on Saturday evening.

It was the fifth success of the term for the daughter of Caballito and Whispering Mist and her eighth altogether. In addition, she has run up a lengthy list of placings for Bill Jamieson, who races the hardy mare in partnership with his wife. Doug Mangos had to call on all of the reserves of stamina possessed by Twilight Mist to get her home by a length from

Amaze. She raced one off the fence about five places off the pace in the middle part. She sprinted up fast wide out on the home turn and maintained a determined run to the line. Amaze, three wide with cover for the last 1600 m, took the lead from Dutchy about 500 m out and he fought back gamely when headed by Twilight Mist. He held second by a length and a half

from Lumber Jack, with The Sting two lengths back next, clear of Dutchy, which showed that he will not be hard to place to advantage in the spring. Twilight Mist will now go for a winter let-up and then she will be prepared for a spring campaign, which could be aimed at qualifying her for the New Zealand Cup in November. Most of her future racing will be against

the best pacers in commission and her 4min 12.2 s for the 3200 m in cold conditions suggested she will not be out of her depth. Winter Chase came out on top of. the hot favourite, Capri, in the Hotel Russley Stakes. The race was a very tame affair, with Capri leading over the last 1700 m at a leisurely pace. Winter Chase looked un-

likely to secure a run in the straight, but near the end Capri drifted out enough for him to get through. He finished at a great rate and got up to win by half a head. Micawave battled on gamely to take third, half a neck 'back, with Chantilly Belle a useful fourth, ahead of Johnny Tuft, which did not get clear in the straight.
