Swimming Red team has easy win

The Canterbury Red team had a comfortable win against Otago and a Canterbury Black team, in an inter-centre swimming carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park. The Red team, led by the Commonwealth Games representative, Grant Forbes, finished with 355 points. 40 clear of Otago which did not have the strength in the younger age-groups to match the successful Canterbury team. The Canterbury Black squad, with national representatives. Melanie Jones and Kim Dewar, finished a' further 36 points behind. Performances among the leading swimmers were below their best, but one who did make her presence felt was Otago's recent import from Canterbury. Nicola Chambers. She won three events, but the most important was the open 200 m individual medley. To win the medley Miss Chambers had to beat Miss Dewar, the silver medallist in the event at the national championships in march. Miss Chambers' winning time on Saturday evening was 2min 29.35. an effort that would have won her the bronze medal at the national championships. She did not contest the medley at the nationals, and in fact, 'has swum very few competition medleys. The other wins collected by Miss Chambers were in the under 16 years girls 100 m freestyle‘and butterfly. Her butterfly time of Imin 7.5 s was excellent and only 0.3 s off her personal best. One of the closest finishes of the evening was in the feature event, the senior men's 100 m freestyle. Andrew O'Donoghue (Canterbury) and Dean Greenwood (Otago) battled through two lengths with O'Donoghue's superior strength earning him first place by a touch. Both swimmers were credited with the same time — 55.95. Jennifer Queen (Canterbury) was a comfortable winner of the women’s 100 m freestyle. Her time was a smart Imiri 2.3 s and she finished more than a length ahead of Lisa Chamberlain (Canterbury). Megan Tohill (Otago) produced a creditable time to win the women’s 100 m butterfly. Miss Tohill who is at. present living and training in Christchurch with the Wharenui squad, will be making a bid for the Commonwealth Games qualifying time at the same pool with the other five swimmers rejected by the Commonwealth Games selectors. in two weeks. An improvement of 2.55. on Saturday’s time of Imin 6.35, would almost ensure Miss Tohill of selection. Forbes and Miss Dewar easily won the respective men's and women’s 100 m breaststroke, both in good time. There was a

determination in their swimming which augers ' well for Miss Dewar in particular, who will also be seeking Games qualification. Abbreviations used in the results are: Canterbury Black (C. 8.
