Sydenham-Cashmere gained its first competition points with a 10 win over Woolston 11. gaining seventh place on the table. This match was vigorous, with plenty ot attack demonstrated bySydenham players, although Woolston II players came off worst when the play became too boisterous. Selwyn went down with a 1-0 loss to Harewood, to lose its top position on the table. The dominant feature of the game was- lack of co-ordination from the favoured Selwyn side, although Harewbod could well have improved its score. The inability to score, coupled with unco-ord’inated attempts to gain ball possession, frustrated Carlton in the first half, although the team-work improved in the second spell. It is to University's credit that it held Carlton scoreless until the last 20 minutes of the game. Three goals were scored by Carlton in - quick succession. largely due to a tired University side. Woolston I v. Burnside

From earlv in the game, Woolston I showed with considerable determination and effort, that they were not to be dominated. Judy Phillips, and Anthea Feaver. who is injured. Harewood v. Selwyn

The only goal scored, to Harewood's advantage against Selwyn. came early in the match from’ a penalty corner. Although a fast and vigorous game, Selwyn showed only flashes of good’tactical play and ball skills. The teams were evenly matched, although Harewood managed to dominate possession ot territory throughout the match. All facets of play improved in the second half, but opportunities were con-, sistently missed by Selwyn and Harewuod alike.

Sydenham-Cashmere v. Woolston II

Woolston II looked to have the initial advantage against Sydenham. but Sydenham's more determined approach to the game ensured it of more ball possession. Carlton dominated play in the second half with speed and good passing. The left inner. ShirleyHaig, opened the score for Carlton with a good show of individual strength. A penalty corner, in which Nicky Turner drove the ball, ueflected off a defender's leg to score the next goal, followed by another penalty corner goal placed by Cathy Thompson. Burnside continued to pressurise a well co-ordinated Carlton side, although a penalty stroke awarded to Carlton ensured Kathy Paterson of placing the fourth goal. The final goal was an excellent example of team-work between the centre forward, Lorraine Reeves, placed by. Shirley Haig. Woolston I v. Harewood Also at Nunweek Park.
