Consultation in Government
Sir.—A. K. Grant (May 24) misses the point of Mr Muldoon's motives. Mr Muldoon is a politician before anything else. His first reaction is to deceive his opponents about anything he sees as being advantageous to his interests. If New Zealanders are stupid (blind) enough to allow their politicians the luxury of an electoral method that consist-
ently excludes the majority from participation in the affairs of government and gives carte blanche authority to such individuals, one can hardly blame Mr Muldoon for taking full advantage of such power. He is under no constitutional obligation whatsoever to consult anyone — least of all the public. A. K. Grant should count his blessings; the mediamen may be frightened of losing their jobs but not, as in some countries, their lives even though there are no constitutional or electoral safeguards in our system to prevent Mr Muldoon from using such powers. Watch it, Grant! — Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON. May 25, 1982.
