Canoes prepared

NZPA-Reuter Congleton Two Transglobe men marooned on an Arctic ice floe will use North American Indian-style canoes to resume their attempt to be the first to circle the world via both the North and South Poles. A canoe-building firm in the north-west England town of Congleton said its boats

would be flown to Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Mr Charles Burton, enabling them to cross 240 km of melting ice to meet their ship, the Benjamin Bowring, and complete their three-year voyage. The firm's craftsmen have worked day and night since Tuesday to modify the two five-metre aluminium-hulled craft with fitted skis.
