‘Housing crisis’

PA Wellington A vigorous house-bunding programme is urgently required to alleviate a Maori housing crisis, says the member of Parliament for Eastern Maori, Dr Peter Tapsell.

He criticised the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch) for saying that his department’s housing work would be “reviewed.”

“Perhaps he could start byreviewing why the department underspent its housing allocation last year by some $2 million," said Dr Tapsell. “Lack of housing has reached crisis point for the Maori people. Hundreds of families are without a decent home, and most of them have little prospect of ever finding one," he said.
