Assault on police brings $200 fine
PA Auckland A man found guilty of assaulting two policemen ■ during the trial of Springbok tour protesters in the Dis-, trict Court at Auckland in March, has been sentenced in the District Court at Henderson. ,• Adrian Raymond Reti, aged 18, a gardener, of Ponsonby, was fined $lOO on each of two charges of assault. • Judge M. J. A. Brown also ordered that half of Reti’s fine be paid to one of the policemen as compensation. Miss Ailsa Duffy, for Reti, said ■ the offences occurred after Judge Callander ordered the public from the
courtroom .where Springbok tour protesters were appearing. “The defendant now realises there can be no excuse for striking policemen,” she said. The court was told that Reti was now more responsible. He was’engaged to be married and had also completed an Outward Bound course. “If you go about punching policemen you are going, to be inward bound,” the Judge warned Reti. He said Reti was an intelligent young man caught up in the passions surrounding the Springbok tour. However, his actions were not justified.
