Unions combine to get more staff at hospitals

A combined committee of Public Service Association and Canterbury Trades Council unionists has been formed and will “ginger things up” in matters involving the North Canterbury Hospital Board, said the Canterbury regional secretary of the Public Service Association, Mr J. M. McKenzie, yesterday. The formation of the committee, which was ratified by the Canterbury Trades Council this week, has come after dissatisfaction by the P.S.A. at the association's progress in achieving satisfaction from the board over staffing levels at Sunnyside and Templeton hospitals. The committee comprises three representatives of the P.S.A. and three from trade unions which have members working for the. board.

Mr McKenzie said that the committee would give the unions a unified approach. Two matters which would be raised initially would be the planned closing of hostels at Sunnyside and Templeton, and the need for a breakdown on staffing levels to be provided to' the committee. “We believe they have been making certain positions redundant without informing the unions,” Mr McKenzie said. Executive officers of the P.S.A. in Wellington this week declined to ratify a decision of Sunnyside nurses last week to serve notice of a 48-hour stoppage on the board. The officers declined because of the small number of nurses which had attended the meeting at which the decision had been made and because of the narrow

majority in favour of direct action.' The nurses had wanted a stoppage in protest at staffing levels. Mr McKenzie said that there would not be another meeting of the nurses at Sunnyside. The regional committee of the P.S.A. had met yesterday and had decided to study the recommendations of the working party on staffing levels. The regional committee would then seek another meeting with the board to discuss the implementation of the recommendations. The board was bound to comply with the recommendations. which would give Sunnyside another 27 nurses and Templeton another 45. These would bring the number of staff only to the minimum needed.
