College rugby tour

The St Bede's College first XV had two wins, two losses, and a draw on a five-match rugby and educational tour to Australia during the May school holidays.

Fifteen supporters accompanied the team, which was coached by one of the teachers. Mr G. P. Lennon, while Mr L. C. Hassall, of Hawarden, was the tour manager.

The college lost to Randwick College. Sydney, 921, drew with Newington Methodist College. Sydney, 00; lost to St Edmund's College, Canberra, 9-14; beat

Downlands College. Toowoomba, 19-14; and beat Church of England College, Brisbane, 11-4. These early season results were considered satisfactory, particularly as no practices were held during the .tour because of the billeting and educational commitments. Two of the Australian colleges will play return matches against St Bede’s

when they make a tour to this country later this rugby season. They are the Church of England College and Downlands College. The supporters included the college rector (Father Gerard Mills), the bursar (Bro. Hugh Peacock), and several North Canterbury parents who had sons playing in the team for which the tour captain was John Morrison. of Darfield.

Other players were appointed as captain for the individual games, with the responsibility of speaking at the after match functions.
