Burnside and Linwood share squash lead
Burnside and Linwood were locked at the top of the points table after some entertaining contests in the latest round of the men's division one inter-club squash competition on Tuesday evening.
The Linwood team caught up the two-point deficit with a 3-1 win over High School Old Boys. Robbie Burnett playing particularly well to beat John Tolchard for the loss of just six points. The contest was clinched for Linwood in the final match of the night when Grant Egan overcame the higher-ranked Trevor George in five games. George had needed to win. 3-1. but although. Egan looked tired near the end (his flowing locks were a little bedraggled), the crisp drives and drop shots kept coming.
Burnside's encounter with Suburbs was marked by a super performance from the junior. Mark Crosbie. who recorded a shock victory over the Squash-
ways professional. Barry Taylor. Crdsbie. himself a little surprised by the result, won in straight games keeping on the power and hitting a number of nicks and tight forehand drops.
For a time the team's chances of staying ahead of Linwood looked alive as Stuart Hargreaves, the Burnside captain, (ought valiantly against Suburb's Max Morrison in an attempt to get his team eight points. Hargreaves recovered from 3-8 to take the third and then levelled at 7-7 after trailing 3-7 in the fourth. However, he managed only two more points in spite of Charlie Waugh-style full length kamikaze dives.
Sumner, which had been languishing near the bottom of the ladder, surprised with a 3-1 success against the third-placed Christchurch Football side. Ron Marshall. Ryan McCuthcheon. and Blair Michelson all had good wins. There was a very close contest
between the two Christchurch teams.. In the end. the No. 4 Andrew Purves. playing his first division one game’ needed 14 points against Ed Post. (Christchurch II) to give the No. 1 team a win. Purves. as per instructions, kept pounding away at the left-handed Post’s backhand corner. but he fell just two points short of his goal. At Ashburton the combined Wigram-Lincoln side was again down on strength and lost to the home team on a games countback.
In the women's competition there is an identical situation where Vistalite Sumner and Burnside I have drawn well clear of the rest of the bunch.
Vistalite Sumner took full points for the fourth week on end and Burnside I lost the slender lead it had previously held when its experienced No' 4. Saskia O'Brien., surprisingly fell to the junior. Justine Marriott (Sumner II). in four games. Burnside's
Mary Hunt also had a real battie, having to come back from 4-8 match ball down against Jeanette McCutcheon in the fourth game to win. Barbara McGregor's misfortune helped Burnside II to victory in a womens match at Ashburton. An achilles tendon injury forced her to withdraw early in the first game against Alrita Hooper. Christchurch H's result against Lancaster Park all hinged on the final match between WendyThompson and Frances Ormandy. Thompson was in dynamic form and dropped onlyfour points.
