Amalgamation

Sir,—Some sense must be injected into vague statements by the Mayor and others about amalgamation. The ramifications of" the Urban Transport Act suggest to those of us involved, a rationalisation between the Transport Board and the United Council in the near future. The most appropriate form of any amalgamation would be for the rationalisation of the Catchment and Drainage Boards under the United Council umbrella also. Those of us who support universal suffrage, however, will strongly resist any moves to widen the power and authority of the United Council as it is constituted. The real solution for amalgamation/ratibnalisation is a directly elected regional council to replace the United Council. Until all Canterbury residents are afforded equal voting status through a directly elected regional council, any speculation on amalgamation is just pie in the sky. — Yours, etc., CR GEOFF STONE, Christchurch City Council, Christchurch Transport Board, Canterbury United Council. May 20, 1982.
