A limited issue of gold and silver Skylab medallions, each containing a piece of the first United States space station, have been minted in Australia. The medallions mark Skylab’s violent return to ea.'th in outback Western Australia in July, 1979. A Perth company, Kara International, has produced 500 gold and 10,000 silver medallions. They were the idea of its director and architect. Mervyn Cole, who obtained several large pieces of Skylab debris soon after the spacecraft’s re-entry. He is planning an expedition into central Australia in search of Skylab’s missing eight-tonne telescope and scientific package. The medallions carry certificates of authenticity and were produced by the Perth Mint from master dies made by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. The obverse side shows Skylab in orbit over the Pacific Ocean and the reverse depicts its re-entry path across the Indian Ocean to Australia. The gold medallions, containing 1.480 z of 24-carat gold, are priced at sAustl6so and the silver at sAust34s. The picture shows Mr Cole with the medallions — gold (left) and silver.
