Motorist jailed
PA Auckland Motorists who drink and drive must face the consequences, an Auckland High Court judge warned yesterday when he jailed a student, aged 21, who caused the death of a girl, aged 16. when their two vehicles collided. Twelve others were injured in the head-on accident and two of them would bear the scars for the rest of their lives, said Mr Justice Sinclair when sentencing Brian John Murphy to two years jail. His driver’s licence was cancelled for five years. Murphy, of Hamilton, had pleaded guilty in the District
Court at Auckland to a charge of manslaughter. The Court heard he caused the death of Sandra Joy Gilchrist in a road accident in Alexandra on January 16. The Judge said Murphy’s car was weaving across the road and was partly over the centre line and travelling at an excessive speed when it collided with an on-coming vehicle driven by the victim. There were 10 people in Murphy’s vehicle and five in the other car. A blood test had revealed that Murphy had 119 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
