Strike brings halt to Firestone production

Production has stopped at the Papanui factory of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company, Ltd. over a dispute involving 20 laboratory and technical workers. The striking workers, who belong to the Canterbury Rubber Workers' Union, have been on an indefinite strike since May 10 over a relativity claim. Production at the factory has been winding down since then, and stopped at 7 a.m. yesterday.

The company's industrial relations manager, Mr G. J. Lea, said that about 200 production workers had been suspended. It was too early to say how orders would be affected by the strike. The firm's products were still in warehouses. As well as research and development work, the laboratory and technical workers are employed to make essential checks on the firm's tyre and tube products.
