Police name man

The Christchurch police have released the name of the man who hanged himself with a strip of blanket in the cells at Christchurch central police station early on Tuesday morning. He was William King, aged 37, who had no permanent address. Chief Superintendent J. A. Jamieson said that Mr King had been arrested on two

warrants. One had been issued at Hawera on a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol; the other had been issued in New Plymouth for breach of bail in relation to the first offence. Mr Jamieson said that Mr King had appeared cheerful and settled for the night. He had been checked regularly during the night, along with other prisoners, before his body was found at 5.5 a.m.
