Lions pair named

NZPA London Willie John Mcßride adds another page to his unique contribution to British and Irish rugby when he manages the Lions in New Zealand next year. The former Ireland and Lions captain is joined by Scotland’s Jim Telfer, who will coach the side.

Mr Mcßride, a 41-year-old Ballymena banker, is the most capped Lion in the game’s history, with 17 appearances and a record five tours. He has 80 international caps in all — one fewer than another Ulsterman, Mike Gibson — in a career stretching from 1962 to 1975. His greatest contribution was to lead the unbeaten Lions in South Africa in 1974, but he also locked the scrum when the All Blacks were beaten for the first time in 1971.

His other tours were two to South Africa in the 1960 s and the unsuccessful trip to New Zealand in 1966.

Mr Telfer, aged 42, a former captain of Scotland and now the national coach, was with Mr Mcßride on the 1966 and ’6B tours.

He played 25 times for Scotland between 1964 and 1970 in the back row, but this does not inhibit him from allowing the Scottish backs to express the full range of their ability.
