Fans expect too much — coach
PA Auckland Some New Zealanders are expecting too much of their World Cup soccer team in Spain, according to Jim MacLachlan, the coach of the League of Ireland side which has just finished a fivematch tour in New Zealand. “A few people we have spoken to during the tour are talking about what is going to happen in Spain,” said Mr MacLachlan. "It would be so nice if the team did succeed, but the public should take the pressure off the side and the officials and just be grateful New Zealand has qualified.” Mr MacLachlan said he could not see New Zealand being disgraced in its matches against Scotland, Russia and Brazil. “If they don’t get an early goal
against New Zealand they could get very frustrated,” he said.
“The most impressive thing about your side is its togetherness and spirit.
. “There are some individuals who stand out, like Wynton Rufer, who can score from almost anywhere, but he is only going to get two or three chances in a game in Spain.”
Mr MacLachlan said he was surprised at the physical contact and competitiveness of the New Zealanders when the tour started. “But we accepted that — it’s their strength.”
“If New Zealand plays to that in Spain they should be all right. If they change . things and try and start juggling the ball around they could go down the creek,” Mr MacLachlan said.
