Squash positions unchanged

Positions at the top remained exactly the same after the latest round of the division one interclub squash competitions. Bumside (34 points) retained its two-point lead over Linwood (32) in the men’s competition and there is an identical situation in the women’s top grade where Bumside I leads Vistalite Sumner.

The Burnside men took eight points from their match against Christchurch I. but it was a close-run thing. John Kev, playing his first division one’match, had to come from two games down to shade Alan Lowe and Andrew Smith needed to play especially soundly to beat the left-hander, Stephen Hailes, in four tight games. Linwood also picked up eight points with Gary Monk in a particularly confident mood as ne swept aside Suburbs’ Max Morrison for his fourth straight win. The only loser was Craig Hibbert, back in his old No. 1 position and unfortunate to encounter the well-performed Squashways professional, Barrv Taylor. Hibbert had a chance for a 2-1 games lead, but failed to capitalise on three game balls in the third.

Easily the earliest game to finish was that between WigramLincoln and Christchurch Football. The combined team turned up with only two players, one man still expected down from Auckland, and eventually had to default in the bottom two positions. Still, the Wigram No. 1. Lyn Sparks, found some solace with a straight games win over his opposite number. John Oakley.

Sumner was another team to win near maximum points. For Christchurch 11, the top player, Don Preston, was the sole victor, winning 17 points on end at one stage against John Christensen, who suffered a groin injury. Christensen subsequently had ,to pull out of this week-end's inaugural High School Old Boys open tournament — but there was an immediate replacement on hand. Barrie Matthews, a former Canterbury representative now living in Otaki, was in Christchurch on holiday watching the squash and eagerly accepted a chance to play in the tournament.

In the women’s competition both Vistalite Sumner and Burnside I took maximum points and are already drawing well clear of the other nine teams.

Vistalite Sumner extracted full points from the club’s No. 2 team, only the No. 4, Suzanne Davies, taken to five games by Justine Marriott, in any way extended.

The High School Old Boys team also had a clean sweep, Bette King beating Ashburton's Czesia Bowan in five games and Lorraine Sutherland in devastating form against Jane Sinclair. Points—
