Nuclear weapons
Sir,—ln our troubled debate, may I commend three highly authoritative articles, “Reflections (Nuclear Arms)” in “The New Yorker” issues of February 1, 8 and 15, this year. This most responsible magazine commissioned and printed John Hershey's “Hiroshima,” and the three February articles, by Jonathan Schell, have the same meticulous research and impact. Pointing out the very real possibility of the extinction of the human race, Mr Schell maintains “The only possible global solution is a global political one.” In passing, he says the dairy cow and pine trees are especially and fatally vulnerable to radiation and fall-out. — Yours, etc., JIM HENDERSON, Auckland. May 15, 1982.
