Record gate expected
The Canterbury Football Association is expecting its gate record of 12,500 to fall when the English first division club, Watford, meets New Zealand at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday. The record was set in the match between Hungary and New Zealand earlier this year. The C.F.A. chairman. Mr Alan Fraser, said last evening that he had not had a chance to count ticket sales
in Christchurch yet but demand from outside areas such as Blenheim, Timaru, Otago and Ashburton had been very strong. “All I know is that we have been sending out tickets for busloads — we have two busloads from Blenheim so far,” he said. The pre-match build-up on Sunday will take on something of an F.A. Cup flavour with community singing to be organised by a police band, a Maori challenge for
both teams, and. weather permitting, the release of helium-filled balloons. The Watford squad will be arriving in Christchurch from Australia at 4.40 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, the New Zealand squad had set down training sessions at the Christchurch Boys’ High School grounds at "10 a.m. on Friday, and at Queen Elizabeth II Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mr Fraser said.
