China sets up eye bank
NZPA Peking China has set up its first eye bank in Canton as part of a national effort to develop the practice of corneal transplants', the New China News Agency reports. The agency said half of the more than two million Chinese who had gone blind because of corneal ailments could recover their vision with the aid of such a transplant. Hospitals in Peking. Shanghai, Tianjin, Wuhan, and Canton can already do this operation, but they have so far been hampered by a shortage of eye tissue.
