Prison for beating, burning child

PA Wellington A woman, who beat a child and burned him 39 times with a cigarette, was sentenced to 18 months prison in the District Court at Wellington yesterday. Her husband was jailed for nine months. Metua Moutira, aged 34, a table hand, had earlier pleaded guilty to wilfully illtreating a child under 16 in a manner likely to cause him unnecessary suffering. Her husband, Ngaro Noutira, aged 38, a dustman, had been convicted after a defended hearing for wilfully permitting the child to be illtreated. Counsel for Mrs Moutira (Mr Johnathon Williams) told Judge E. B. Robertson that the probation report was full and favourable. Metua Moutira was extremely ashamed and full of remorse, he said.

The Judge said the treatment of the boy could only be described as barbarous and whatever the boy said could not justify what Mrs Moutira did.

Counsel for Mr Ngaro Moutira (Mr Donal Heatley) will appeal against the conviction and sentence. Moutira has been granted bail pending the appeal hearing.
