‘New’ Frigates may be delayed

PA Wellington ' The Falklands crisis may delay the delivery of New Zealand’s two “new” frigates, said the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) yesterday. The two Leander class frigates — Dido and Bacchante — have been bought from the Royal Navy and are in the Navy’s Falklands task force and back-up.

Mr Thomson said that New Zealand’s naval dockyard was planning to receive the first of the frigates in September or October, but Britain’s need for the ships had priority. “Obviously, the offer that Britain has made and we have accepted must be in view of Britain’s need,” he said.

“I can’t imagine New Zealand in any way trying to insist on getting the first of the frigates on time. “We have made New Zealand's position with Britain in the Falklands very clear. We have supported Britain.” Mr Thomson was asked if New Zealand could get similar warships elsewhere if the Dido and Bacchante became unavailable. “No, nowhere else," he said. “We scavenged the docks, we scavenged the builders when we were looking for replacements for the . Taranaki and eventually the x Otago. “We really looked everywhere. The offer by Britain was a godsend.”
