Firestone strike may close plant
A strike by 20 laboratory and technical, workers at the Papanui factory of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Ltd, is expected to bring production to a halt later this week. The company’s industrialrelations manager, Mr G. J. Lea, said that production was still winding down and that it would cease tomorrow or Thursday if. the strike continued. About 150 production workers had been suspended. The laboratory and technical workers, who are mem-
bers of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union, had given notice yesterday that: they intended to continue the strike; As well as research and development work, the striking workers are em-
ployed to make essential process checks on the firm’s tyre and tube products. Mr L. G. Morel, the secretary of the union, said that the dispute was over a relativity claim. No talks were going on.
