Divers’ bid

Divers attending a national training clinic at Queen Elizabeth II Park pool this week have aspirations of increasing New Zealand’s representation in the sport at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.

To this end they will take part in a trial contest on Thursday at 2 p.m., hopeful of convincing the selectors that the standard warrants additions to the team.

Competitors have been told that the door is still open for Brisbane nominations, and Karen Munro (Auckland), for one, will be keen to take advantage of this opportunity. She was among the swimming and diving choices for the Games, but was rejected by the N.Z.O.C.G.A. selectors. Gary Lamb is another diver who might come strongly into consideration.

The aspirants will be encouraged by the presence of Mark Graham, the New Zealand entrant for the World championships in July. He has just returned from the United States.

A squad of 13 divers will train at the pool this week under the tutelage of Mr Merv Campbell, the coach for the Games competitors.
