TWO MEMBERS of the New Zealand amateur boxing A team for the Oceania Games, Billy Meehan (Palmerston North) and Shane Gray (Porirua), were recently beaten in bouts in Wellington. Meehan suffered three standing eight counts in losing unanimously on points to Mike Flavell (Waikato), while Gray conceded a majority decision to Richard Pitman (Heretaunga). Not surprisingly, Flavell and Pitman were subsequently selected in the second New Zealand squad to compete in the Games tournament in Auckland from May 24 to 28. IT ■ WAS A Leeston double at the recent Ellesmere "sportspersons of the year"' awards. The awards are made biennially and cover the period since the last presentations. The player award, from nine nominations, was won by the lawn bowler. Morris Nairn, whose very successful run over the last two years included a second placing in the national fours. There were 10 nominations for top administrator and the winner was a rugby official. Murray Cooper. THE PEGASUS indoor hockey team failed narrowly in its attempt to win promotion to division I next year. It won - every match in division II this year leading up to the final, but lost the final, 5-6, in extra time. One player, Dave Robbins, the goal-keeper, did more than his share to hoist the team into the top division. During the season he faced 11 penalty-strokes and not one passed him. He was forced to save eight. The other three passed outside the goal.
