Avon Loop
Sir,—ln response to Elsie Locke’s letter on the Avon Loop (May 12) I would like to clarify a few points. That trust members were “temporary residents” exhibits fully A.L.P.A.’s attitude to tenants and is also inaccurate in that some members still living in the Loop have been resident for over four years. I was resident for over five years before being “elbowed out.” The very house I lived in illustrates the substance of last Friday’s feature, and shows that the image of' “another Merivale in the making" is no laughing matter. When I was given notice in January I was paying ?20 rent per week. After a coat of paint, new wallpaper and a hot water cylinder this same one and a half bedroom cottage with outside toilet was advertised for rent last week at $BO per week. While rents have increased outside the Loop the rise has not been so extreme and never as much as 400 per cent — Yours, etc., ROD DONALD. May 12, 1982.
